Friday's Settlement Closes the Week With Oil, Metals and Clean Power Each Telling Its Own Story
The final session of the week gave traders a clear read on how energy producers, miners and renewable names are positioned heading into the weekend.
Stake & PaperOctober 24, 2026 Friday's Session at a Glance
The session that closed Friday, October 23, 2026, gave a useful cross-section of the energy complex as traders squared positions before the weekend. On the scoreboard, ConocoPhillips (COP) rose 3.55%, which put it at the top of the group, while Newmont (NEM) slipped 4.59% at the other end of the range. On breadth, advancers outnumbered decliners 11 to 7. In all, 11 of the 19 names rose and 7 of the 19 names fell, and 1 of the 19 names were unchanged.
Oil and Gas
The broad energy benchmark is the best place to start. Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 2.60% and finished at $69.33 on Friday. The exploration and production proxy, SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration (XOP), gained 2.45%, so the more commodity-sensitive part of the group can be compared directly with the diversified benchmark. The gap between the two shows how much of the session was driven by crude-price exposure and how much by the large integrated companies that anchor the sector index.
Among the integrated majors, ExxonMobil (XOM) advanced 2.79% and Chevron (CVX) climbed 2.88%. In Europe-based names, BP plc (BP) advanced 2.54% while Shell plc (SHEL) climbed 2.25%. Comparing the U.S. and European majors is a reasonable gauge of whether the session was a sector-wide story or one tied to company-specific positioning. On the producer side, ConocoPhillips (COP) rose 3.55% and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) gained 2.67%. Both are more closely tied to upstream pricing than the integrateds, so their moves relative to SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration (XOP) say something about how the market is treating pure-play production exposure.
Metals and Mining
Precious metals set the tone for the miners. Gold fell 0.71% and settled at $3,994.77 on Friday, while silver slipped 1.32% and finished at $53.85 on Friday. The relationship between the two is worth watching, since silver tends to amplify the direction of gold and also carries industrial demand.
The gold producers followed their underlying metal to varying degrees. Newmont (NEM) declined 4.59%, Barrick Mining (B) dropped 1.32% and Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) fell 1.25%. If the miners and bullion are moving in the same direction, that points to conviction behind the metal's move. If they are not, equity-specific factors are probably at work.
Copper-linked names offered a separate read on industrial sentiment. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) rose 0.91% and Southern Copper (SCCO) gained 0.77%. Copper equities respond to global growth expectations, so their behavior relative to the gold miners shows whether the session leaned toward defensive or cyclical positioning.
Clean Energy and Critical Minerals
In renewables, Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) fell 0.68% and iShares Global Clean Energy (ICLN) slipped 0.93%. Solar and broader clean-energy baskets are sensitive to interest-rate expectations and policy headlines, so they often move on different drivers from the oil complex. Global X Lithium & Battery Tech (LIT), covering lithium and battery technology, finished little changed at +0.00%, giving a view of the electrification supply chain.
The nuclear and specialty-materials group rounded out the picture. Global X Uranium ETF (URA) advanced 0.06%, Cameco (CCJ) declined 0.42% and MP Materials (MP) slipped 0.67%. Uranium and rare earths remain tied to long-term supply security themes, and the way they traded against the more rate-sensitive solar and clean-power funds is a useful sign of which part of the transition trade attracted capital.
Cross-Sector Read
Placing the three groups side by side is the most useful exercise from this session. Fossil-fuel producers trade mainly on commodity prices and capital discipline. Miners trade on metals prices and the dollar. Clean-energy funds trade on rates and policy. When these groups move together, a macro factor is usually dominant. When they separate, as the spread between the top and bottom performers suggests they may have here, individual drivers matter more than the overall market backdrop.
What to Watch
- Crude and the energy complex: Follow-through in Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) and SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration (XOP) at the start of the new week will show whether Friday's positioning holds or reverses.
- Bullion: Gold at $3,994.77 and silver at $53.85 set the reference points for the miners, and any weekend headlines on the dollar or rates could shift them.
- Clean-energy sentiment: Moves in Invesco Solar ETF (TAN), iShares Global Clean Energy (ICLN) and Global X Lithium & Battery Tech (LIT) will show whether renewable names are being driven by rates or by sector news.
- Earnings and policy calendar: Corporate reports from energy and mining companies in the coming sessions may widen the gaps between names that Friday's trading began to show.
