Monday's Close Sorts Energy Winners From Laggards Across Oil, Metals and Clean Power
Monday's session produced a spread of outcomes across producers, miners and clean-energy funds, with individual names mattering more than any single sector theme.
Stake & PaperOctober 6, 2026 Monday's Session at a Glance
Monday's U.S. close was defined by dispersion. Cameco (CCJ) rose 2.69%, the strongest showing among the names we track, while Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) slipped 0.86%, the weakest. Breadth tells the same story: advancers outnumbered decliners 11 to 7. 11 of the 19 names rose and 7 of the 19 names fell, and 1 of the 19 names were unchanged. The tape did not move as one block, so the sector-by-sector detail below matters more than any single headline number.
Oil and Gas
The broad energy benchmarks set the baseline. The Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 1.00%, closing higher at $63.45 at Monday's close. The more production-sensitive SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration (XOP) gained 1.36%. Comparing the two shows how much of the day's action came from large integrated companies and how much from exploration and production names with more direct commodity exposure.
Among the majors, ExxonMobil (XOM) finished little changed at -0.01% and Chevron (CVX) dropped 0.11%. These two anchor the sector ETF, so their combined direction goes a long way toward explaining the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) result. ConocoPhillips (COP) rose 1.30% and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) gained 0.40%, which gives a read on how the pure-play producers traded against the integrateds.
The European majors added a transatlantic view. BP plc (BP) declined 0.38% and Shell plc (SHEL) climbed 0.30%. Both are heavily tied to global crude and gas pricing and to refining and trading performance. When they diverge from their U.S. counterparts, the cause is usually currency, local positioning or company-specific news rather than a change in the oil outlook.
Metals and Mining
Precious metals set the tone for the miners. Gold fell 0.13%, with the metal at $4,133.97 at Monday's close. Silver gained 0.98% and finished at $60.91 on Monday. Silver's industrial exposure usually gives it a different personality from gold, and the gap between the two is a useful gauge of whether buyers were chasing safety or economic sensitivity.
The gold equities reflected that backdrop in their own way. Newmont (NEM) advanced 0.22%, Barrick Mining (B) dropped 0.57% and Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) fell 0.20%. Miners tend to amplify moves in the underlying metal because of operating leverage, so the size of each move against gold's is worth noting.
Copper-linked names offered a separate read. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) rose 0.78% and Southern Copper (SCCO) slipped 0.12%. These trade more on global growth expectations and supply disruptions than on the safe-haven bid that drives gold. MP Materials (MP), the rare-earths producer, slipped 0.28%. It continues to trade on policy and supply-chain themes more than on the broader metals complex.
Uranium, Lithium and Clean Energy
The nuclear and battery-materials corner of the market showed its own pattern. The Global X Uranium ETF (URA) advanced 1.01%, and Cameco (CCJ), its best-known constituent, advanced 2.69%. The Global X Lithium & Battery Tech (LIT) climbed 1.23%, a reminder that battery-metals sentiment can run on a different clock from both uranium and conventional energy.
Within renewables, the Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) fell 0.86%, while the iShares Global Clean Energy (ICLN) gained 0.58%. Solar is more sensitive to rates and financing costs, while the global clean-energy basket is more diversified across wind, utilities and equipment makers. Differences between the two often come down to interest-rate expectations and policy headlines.
Cross-Sector Takeaways
The session showed little agreement between fossil-fuel producers, metals miners and clean-energy funds, with each group reacting to its own drivers. Oil equities followed crude and company-specific news. Gold and silver miners followed the metals. Clean-energy funds followed rates and policy. This was a stock-picker's tape rather than one driven by a single macro theme.
What to Watch
- Crude and gas direction: Whether the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) and SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration (XOP) results hold or reverse will show how much conviction sits behind Monday's positioning.
- Gold and silver: Follow-through in the metals will decide whether the miners' moves are sustained. Watch gold's $4,133.97 level as a reference point.
- Clean-energy sensitivity to rates: Any shift in rate expectations could quickly reshape the solar and global clean-energy funds.
- Breadth: If the split between gainers and losers narrows, a broader theme may be forming. If it persists, selectivity will keep driving results.
