Sony Ends PlayStation Disc Production
PhotographSony announced Wednesday it will cease production of physical game discs for PlayStation consoles starting January 2028, while simultaneously shuttering PS3 and Vita digital stores.

Sony will end production of physical discs for PlayStation video game consoles starting in January 2028 , the company announced Wednesday morning . Beginning at that time, new game purchases will only be available through the PlayStation Store or from retailers in digital formats .

Nearly four in five purchases of full games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 were purchased digitally in the past year , according to Sony's investor reports. By Q4 of fiscal year 2025, that figure reached a record-breaking 85% , GameSpot reported in May. The shift comes as Grand Theft Auto VI's physical version will contain only a download code inside the box , signaling broader industry momentum away from disc-based media.

What Happens to Existing Physical Games?

The transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format , according to Sony's official blog post. Players who own disc-based PS5 consoles will still be able to play their existing physical libraries.

Sony described the move as "a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs" . The company committed to still selling games in physical retailers even after they drop discs in 2028 , though how those games will be sold—in boxes with codes inside, as cards marked with digital redemption codes—remains unclear .

PS3 and Vita Stores Closing After Two Decades

Sony simultaneously announced the closure of PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita platforms. The PS3 store will close in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting August 2026, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries following in late 2026 . In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027 .

Sony cited the platforms' inability to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards . Players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future , the company stated.

Sony previously attempted to close the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital stores in 2021, but reversed the decision after player backlash, with then-SIE president Jim Ryan stating: "Upon further reflection, it's clear that we made the wrong decision here" . The PSP store closed as planned on July 2, 2021.

The Digital Shift Accelerates

The timing reflects a decade-long industry transformation. PC games effectively went all-digital years ago, thanks to the popularity of playing games through Steam and other digital storefronts . Sony and Microsoft both launched their current gen Xbox Series and PS5 consoles in 2020 with cheaper versions that lacked disc drives .

In 2025, 49% of PS5 units sold in the U.S. had no disc drive; for Xbox Series X/S that figure was 66% , according to industry data. More than half of all consoles sold in one of the world's biggest gaming markets cannot play a physical game .

The news from PlayStation comes just a few days after Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will be digital only , The Hollywood Reporter noted. Some boutique retailers that specialize in physical games have decided to drop GTA 6 pre-orders altogether, with Canadian retailer VGP stating it has a standing policy of not carrying "code in a box" releases .

Game Preservation Concerns Mount

The dual announcement raises questions about long-term game access. Storefronts shut down and purchases can even be revoked, as in the case of 2024's Concord, which Sony unreleased just weeks after it launched , Kotaku reported.

According to a 2023 study by the Video Game History Foundation, 87% of video games released in the United States before 2010 have been lost or are at risk of being lost due to lack of video game preservation . Myrient, one of the internet's largest gaming archives with over 390 terabytes of data, announced in March 2026 that it would shut down, with its creator acknowledging they had been paying $6,000 a month out of pocket to keep the site running .

In mid-June, the European Commission formally declined to force publishers to keep purchased games playable after they are switched off — even though the "Stop Killing Games" campaign had gathered close to 1.3 million verified signatures across the European Union .

What Changed This Week

Sony's announcement marks the first time a major console manufacturer has set a firm end date for physical game production. The decision affects both first-party Sony titles and third-party games from all publishers. With digital sales representing 85% of PlayStation purchases and the industry's biggest upcoming release—GTA VI—shipping as code-in-box, the writing appeared on the wall. The simultaneous closure of legacy digital storefronts underscores the finite lifespan of digital game access, even as the industry moves away from permanent physical ownership.

What to Watch

Industry analysts conclude from the news that "the base version of a PS6 will not include a physical media drive," as Sony looks to keep costs down on the device . Microsoft's response to Sony's disc-free timeline will signal whether this becomes an industry-wide standard or leaves an opening for competitors.

California's State Assembly passed the Protect Our Games Act by 43 votes to 16, sending it to the State Senate; if it becomes law, publishers selling games from January 1, 2027 would have to give 60 days' notice before ending support and then offer either a playable offline version, a way to run community servers, or a refund . The US Copyright Office's triennial review of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is due to reopen in 2026 , with preservation advocates pushing for expanded access rights.

The PS3 and Vita store closures begin in August 2026 for select territories, with global shutdowns following in July 2027. Games released before January 2028 represent the final wave of PlayStation titles available on physical media.
